Yeroskipou votes to keep its name

Yeroskipou mayor Michalis Pavlides

The Yeroskipou municipal council decided it would not be appropriate to consider switching the municipality’s name to ‘Ieri Kipi’ (Holy Gardens) 10 months before its term expires, mayor Michalis Pavlides said on Tuesday.

The proposal was made by the municipality’s cultural service, based on facts, meaning maps listing ancient names of places, which show Yeroskipou as ‘Ierokipia’ – a portmanteau of the Greek words holy and gardens.

But, Pavlides said, the council thought it would be inappropriate for an outgoing council to make such a decision.

The Yeroskipou mayor added that the cultural services’ proposal was not to rename the city’s geographical name.

This means, Pavlides said, that the municipality would be named ‘Ieri Kipi municipality’, but the area’s geographical name would continue to be Yeroskipou.
