Akinci says leaders discussed speeding up the talks

Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci

Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci said on Saturday that he and President Nicos Anastasides had discussed ways to speed up the negotiations during their meeting earlier in the day.

Akinci said at the beginning of their meeting, he and Anastasiades had discussed recent statements made by both sides. The Turkish Cypriot leader had responded earlier in the week to an interview the president gave to Politis last Sunday saying Anastasiades had made some ‘unilateral interpretations’ as to what had been agreed at the table.

In the second half of the meeting, he said they had discussed ways to accelerate the process.

Responding to a question, Akinci made it clear that though there were differences, there was no deadlock in the negotiations.

The next meeting of the two leaders will be on February 26.
