Manipulation at its best

On Tuesday both Nicosia and Limassol will welcome the National Theatre as THOC and the Rialto will screening a performance of Les Liaisons Dangereuses as part of their National Theatre Live production season.

The performance is based on the 1782 epistolary novel by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos where former lovers, and now rivals, the Marquise de Merteuil and Vicomte de Valmont now compete in games of seduction and revenge.

Merteuil provokes Valmont to corrupt the innocent Cecile de Volanges before her wedding night but Valmont has targeted the virtuous and beautiful Madame de Tourvel. While these merciless aristocrats toy with others’ hearts and reputations, their own may prove more fragile than they supposed.

When it was published the novel may have been seen to be scandalous and something that well-to-do people should have nothing to do with, but over 200 years later, Christopher Hampton’s adaptation swept the board, winning the Olivier and Evening Standard Awards for Best Play.

This revival by director Josie Rourke – and starring Elaine Cassidy, Janet McTeer and Dominic West – now marks the play’s thirty-year anniversary.

Get ready to see “theatre at its most seductive” as reviewed by the Evening Standard and “an evening to richly savour” as the Guardian puts it.

The screenings will be accompanied with Greek and Turkish subtitles.
