Anastasiades briefs Merkel on Cyprus talks

President Nicos Anastasiades and German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Thursday discussed the Cyprus problem and the EU refugee crisis during a meeting held on the sidelines of the European Council Summit in Brussels.

According to a statement by government spokesman Nicos Christodoulides, the German Chancellor asked to be updated on the ‘real situation’ in the ongoing Cyprus peace talks.

“The President of the Republic outlined how the talks process has proceeded since last May until the present day, the issues which have been discussed and those that need to be discussed, and pointed out that, via an overall assessment, once all the chapters have been discussed, we shall see in what way the process can move forward, so that we can achieve an outcome that leaves no gaps nor any ambiguities, constructive or otherwise.”

Anastasiades and Merkel also talked Turkey’s EU accession bid, “which is directly impacted by the current situation and developments on Cyprus, and there was an extensive discussion on the refugee issue.”

Anastasiades returns to Cyprus on Friday.
