THE national schools competition on EU matter from Monday to Friday enters the second phase of the contest for the selection of four preliminary winners who will go through to the grand final on March 23 in Nicosia. This phase follows a series of training seminars and workshops in schools that was completed on February 9.
The national competition is a knowledge quiz on the European Union organised for the second time by the European Parliament Information Office and the European Commission representation in Cyprus. This year, 33 schools from all over Cyprus are taking part – each represented by four students from the second grade of the lyceum (fifth grade high school).
Nine of the schools participating are from the Limassol district, four from Paphos, 13 from Nicosia and seven from Larnaca and Famagusta.
The competition prize is a trip to Brussels or Strasbourg for eight students and two teachers.
“The competition helps to better inform students about the European Union, especially for programmes like Erasmus + that directly affect them,” said the head of the EC Representation in Nicosia George Markopouliotis.
“Through the contest,” head of the European Parliament Office Andreas Ketta commented, “students understand policies and EU decisions directly related to them and that they are able to have their own contribution by becoming active citizens and participate in EU programmes.”
