Masked men mug conscript for his rifle in Nicosia (Update 1)

Two masked men stole a conscript’s army-issue rifle shortly after 2am Monday, the defence ministry announced.

According to a statement, the two men attacked the soldier while he was returning from sentry duty at an outpost in Kaimakli, Nicosia.

“The incident is being investigated by the National Guard and the police,” a short statement by the ministry said.

Police spokesman Andreas Angelides said the soldier has given a statement, but investigations are still at an early stage.

“Immediately after the incident was reported, members of the Nicosia CID went to the scene, along with members of other police departments and the National Guard,” he said.

The soldier, he added, has made the claim that he was attacked by two individuals.

“He will be examined by a medical examiner, and all testing required when such a report is received will be carried out,” he said.
