MARCOS Baghdatis is through to the final of the Dubai Tennis Championships after beating Feliciano Lopez 3-6, 7-6, 6-1 in a thrilling match.
Baghdatis and Lopez went toe-to-toe early on until the Spaniard broke the Cypriot’s serve to make it 5-3 before wrapping up the first set, the first that the Limassol native had lost all tournament.
Despite the setback, Baghdatis, 30, was not keen to roll over and accept defeat, and he started the second set on the front foot, taking the first three games, which seemed to catch Lopez by surprise.
Baghdatis, however, seemed to lose focus and was pegged back to 4-3 in a matter of minutes.
A topsy-turvy set would eventually be settled by a tie-break, which the Cypriot star dominated 7-1 to force a deciding set.
Again, Baghdatis started with a break and this time it would be far more straight-forward as he broke Lopez’s serve again to seal a big win.
Baghdatis will play world number four Stan Wawrinka in Saturday’s final after the reigning French Open champion went through after Nick Kyrgios of Australia retired during their semi-final with a back injury on Friday. The Swiss star was leading 6-4, 3-0 at the time.
