Municipal worker arrested after €22,500 missing

Police arrested a 45-year-old employee of the Mesa Yitonia municipality on Tuesday suspected of embezzling around €22,500.

The man, who appeared at the police station with his lawyer, is expected to be brought before a court on Wednesday.

A warrant for his arrest had been issued on Monday after an internal audit showed that the cash had gone missing between December 2014 and January 2016.

The 45-year-old allegedly failed to issue receipts for payments made by the public and in other cases he forged the books and pocketed the money.

Authorities suspect the amount could be higher as the probe into the case continued.
