Some 380,000 motorists out of around 720,000 have paid their road tax ahead of the March 10 deadline, the road transport department said on Tuesday.
After that date, drivers will be charged a late fee of €10 and an additional penalty of 10 per cent of their tax.
Head of the department, Sotiris Kolettas said most drivers left it until the last moment but previous years were better as regards renewals.
Drivers have 70 days to pay their tax, as renewal started on January 7.
Kolettas said 99 per cent of the renewals were done online. The rest mainly concerned cases where there was a problem with the vehicle.
To renew the road tax, a vehicle must have a valid MOT and insurance.

March 2, 2016 at 14:11Tried to pay on my classic, but couldn’t because it had no MOT. Can get the MOT because it’s in the garage waiting on parts from the UK. Why do you have to have MOT and Insurance to pay??? Makes no sense to me.

March 2, 2016 at 17:06The guy in front of me just quoted his reg number. I had to show everything, including the registration document for the car. It depends on whether your face fits, as to how many documents are needed.

March 2, 2016 at 22:04If I’m going to pay the 300 in road tax why would I skip the 35 MOT? Really makes no sense.

March 2, 2016 at 22:11All paid up. Cost me nearly 600 euros a year in insurance and road tax on a car I drive a few miles at most once a month.

March 2, 2016 at 18:15They’ve never reduced roadtax. The furthest they went was offer payment in installments.
