Run, walk and cycle – a three in one event

The first triathlon of the year, organised by the Nireas Triathlon, will give athletes a chance to put their bodies – and minds – to the test on April 3.

One of the fastest growing modern sports, the triathlon, to take place in Ayia Napa in just under six weeks, will offer two distances, Sprint Triathlon (750m swim – 20km cycle – 5km run), and Triathlon (1,500m swim – 40km cycle – 10km run).

Giving advice about getting into the sport, Nireas Triathlon event director, Panayiotis Ntais said “training in a group and receiving expert guidance from a coach is the best way to get into the sport. Nireas members come from all three individual disciplines as well as complete beginners wishing to take on the three sport challenge. Our club welcomes anyone who wants to get started in triathlon and offers members regular structured training sessions in all three disciplines.”

Continuing to comment on the Ayia Napa Triathlon, he said the event is now established as an annual international triathlon. The people behind it are working very hard to make Cyprus a priority destination for triathletes from northern and eastern Europe.

An aim that is quickly becoming a reality, considering participants registered so far include those from the UK, Lithuania, Germany, Russian Federation and other countries.

For those who don’t want to swim, run and cycle alone, this year team participation has been added to the event line up. Teams of two or three can participate, making the event ideal for first time racers.

The event has seen a steady growth in participants from 100 in 2014 to more than 200 last year. The fun of the race is a big part of what attracts athletes to the event, but there are also the prizes. The first three male and the first female triathletes of the General Individual Traithlon classification will receive a total of €1,200. The first team of the Triathlon will receive a prize of €300. The first male and female of each age group will receive a cup and the second and third of each category will receive a medal during the Prize Awarding Ceremony.

Registration can be done until March 28 on http://www.nireas.org/index.php/AyiaNapa2016.
