Turkish Cypriot side encouraging more settlers to take ‘citizenship’

Around 10,000 Turkish settlers in the north are eligible to for a ‘white card’ that will give them Turkish Cypriot ‘citizenship’ but without the right to vote or be elected.

According to Turkish Cypriot daily Detay, the number of applications for ‘white cards’ increased since February 17 when the price was dropped from TL2,000 (€622) to TL1,000 (€311).

Quoting Asim Akansoy, the ‘minister of interior and labor’, the paper said they were working on ‘white card’ holders obtaining all the rights of a ‘TRNC citizen’ except for the right to vote and be elected and that they were expecting to conclude this work by 2017.

He also said that they had prepared a television spot to encourage people to apply for a ‘white card’, which would begin broadcasting soon.

Akansoy said the number of persons working in the north having a ‘work permit’ was around 40,000 and that 10,000 of these currently had the right to file an application for a ‘white card, which is not obligatory.  Persons can work and live in the north under a ‘work permit’ but only those who possess a ‘white card’ would be allowed to take ‘citizenship.
