Run, women run

It may have been International Women’s Day yesterday but the Cyprus Trail Runners are extending the celebration to Sunday and inviting all girls and women to join them on a run in Nicosia.

Celebrating how far women have come since the 1970s when they were told they should not ever run further than 800m, the runners will host a ten, five, and two kilometre run at Athalassa Park.

Although women have come a long way since then, there is still a long way to go and the runners would also like the run to symbolise the distance that women still have to go to reach true empowerment and equal recognition with men in so many areas of life.

Registration will start at 9am and the run will begin at 10am.

Strictly for women, men can come along and cheer them on.

Profit from the race entry fees – as well as any donations made on race day – will go to the Free to Run organisation. A nonprofit organisation, founded by human rights lawyer and ultra runner Stephanie Case. The organisation aims at using running, physical fitness and outdoor adventure as a means of empowering and educating women in conflict-affected communities to overcome the harmful effects of gender, religious and ethnic discrimination.
