The island’s search and rescue services retrieved the body of a swimmer who apparently drowned on Sunday morning off Cape Greco, on the south east of the island.

Reports were received around 8.45am that a swimmer might be in trouble in the area. But though a rescue vessel with divers were mobilised, plus a police helicopter, the man had drowned by the time they located him.

Under adverse weather conditions, it took rescue divers almost two hours to locate and retrieve the body from the seabed at a depth of 18 metres. The man. who was not identified was taken to Paralimni by boat and from there to the Famagusta hospital.
Police are investigating the circumstances of the drowning.

CyBC later reported that the dead man was an 18-year-old from Nicosia who had gone there with his friends who reports said had tried to dissuade him from swimming. They lost sight of him shortly after he went into the water due to rough seas and alerted the authorities.
