Number of government workers drops 1.7% in Q4,

The number of people employed by the government fell 1.7 per cent in the fourth quarter of 2015 to 64,526 or by 1,144 compared to the respective period of 2014, the statistical service said.

The drop was mainly on a reduced number of workers employed at government-controlled companies which fell 13 per cent to 6,014, while that of civil servants and municipal authority employees fell 0.2 per cent and 2 per cent to 54,249 and 4,253 respectively, Cystat said in a statement on its website on Tuesday.

The number of workers in the wider public sector rose in the fourth quarter compared to July to September by 1,020 or 1.6 per cent, as the increase in the number of workers at the central government and in government controlled companies rose 1.7 per cent and 0.6 per cent respectively offsetting the 1.1 per cent quarterly drop in the numbers of local authority workers, Cystat said.

On average, the number of workers in the public sector fell 2.5 per cent last year to 63,940 mainly on a 17 per cent drop in the number of workers at government controlled companies accompanied by a 0.6 per cent and 2.1 per cent reduction of the number of workers at the central government and local administration respectively, Cystat said.
