A Minute with Steven Ford Owner operator of Cyprus Diving Adventures, celebrating its third anniversary this month

Where do you live?
In Pissouri with my girlfriend

Best childhood memory?
All of it, I had a very happy childhood. I first snorkelled at the age of 8 on a family holiday in West Wales. I was amazed at the underwater world and snorkelled or dived at every opportunity from then until now. I have now been diving for 20 years.

Most frequented restaurant and absolute favourite dish?
There are so many here but to single one out I would say the Meze in the Old Cinema Taverna, Kalopanayotis, a UNESCO heritage village way up in the Troodos. The place is steeped in the culture of the mountains.

What did you have for breakfast?
Fruit. The time is long gone when divers, even instructors, had a wild lifestyle and were rather ‘gung-ho’ about the whole diving experience. Underwater safety nowadays depends so much on good health and the right attitude for divers at all levels.

Would you class yourself as a day or night person?
Day, we have to get up so early, but in Cyprus that’s no hardship as the early mornings looking out to sea are magical.

What is your favourite night out?
Meal and good music with my girlfriend, family and friends

Best book ever read?
Jaws by Peter Benchley, it was my first big read. Published in 1974, it tells the story of a great white shark that preys upon a small American resort town and the exploits of three men trying to kill it. It’s a successful book, later made into an equally suspenseful film.

Favourite film of all time?
The Godfather. I’m not alone in this one as it’s widely regarded as one of the greatest films of all time. A powerful tale of the Sicilian mafia, this mob drama is based on Mario Puzo’s novel of the same name and focuses on the powerful Italian-American crime family of Don Vito Corleone (played by Marlon Brando). Edge of seat stuff – but I’ll bet you expected it to be Jacques Cousteau and the iconic diveboat Calypso.

Favourite holiday destination?
Malaysia, such a mix of cultures and a haven off the less-frequented islands for superb diving.

What music are you listening to in the car at the moment?
Any dance music

What is always in your fridge?
Water and Chocolate

Dream house: rural retreat or urban dwelling? Where would it be, what would it be like?
Nice caravan on a beach; the simple life and as rural as possible for me but must have a power source for the compressor!

If you could pick anyone at all (alive or dead) to go out for the evening with, who would it be?
David Bowie; his recent death was so sad and his music was a part of my life.

Tell me a joke
Sadly diving jokes are rarely clean enough to publish!
