Performing words

The spoken word is a very powerful tool, and no one knows that better than veteran poet, DJ and recording artist Haji Mike, who will give a workshop on the matter on Saturday.

Entitled From Poetry to Performance and Beyond: Taking Your Work from the Written Page to the Spoken Word, the workshop will be given at Write Cy in Nicosia from 10am until 1pm.
The three-hour workshop will explore the fundamentals of performance art and the live experience. Participants will learn about the nature of performance and how to improve their performance skills while also looking at the post-performance stage, covering an array of ways to release and publish poems and songs independently.

Mike will approach this new dimension of the creative process through demonstrations of Dub and Acoustic Poetry, discussion and sharing.

Participants should bring their work with them to perform, share and discuss.

Haji Mike has been making music as an independent artist since 1990. Since then he has released seven CDs and toured in many countries, including Africa and Portugal.

He has collaborated with artists and producers around the world, including Simon Booth from the UK and Bandulu Dub from Portugal. His work has been included in poetry anthologies in Cyprus, UK and Hungary and he has participated as a guest speaker in a variety of countries at key academic/artistic events over the last two decades.

Haji Mike also presents weekly radio shows on various net stations around the world. In late April 2016 he will be appearing in Greece at the legendary Red Sea Reggae House, and in Jamaica at the international ‘DiS Poem’ Festival curated by the mighty Dub Poet Mutabaruka.
