60 tonnes of potatoes seized coming from the north

Three trucks carrying 60 tonnes of uncertified potatoes worth €25,000 were seized at the Pergamos crossing in the Famagusta area, police said on Thursday.

According to a police bulletin, Cypriot officers in collaboration with the Dhekelia British bases, were monitoring the area following a tip-off.

On Wednesday, three Turkish Cypriot trucks were spotted at the buffer zone and were stopped.  The drivers were taken to the customs office at the bases for further investigation.

Under a 2006 amendment to the EU’s 2004 Green Line regulation that is designed to facilitate trade between the two sides, after completion of the procedures the green light for trade in potatoes was given by the competent service of the Commission. All stakeholders were informed about the opportunity to trade potatoes across the Green Line.

During the 2015 reporting period there was no mention of trade in potatoes.
