Paphos municipality evacuated after bomb scare (Updated)

Paphos municipality building

The Paphos municipality and Paphos police received a hoax phone call shortly before noon Monday, warning that a bomb would go off half an hour later at town hall.

The building was immediately evacuated and police rushed to the scene to investigate.

After searching the premises, nothing suspicious was found.

Paphos mayor Phedonas Phedonos told state radio the number of the caller was identified and police were  working to find the person behind the hoax.

It is thought that the threat is not unconnected to Phedonos’ crusade against corruption.

His latest effort – still ongoing – relates to attempts by private interests to interfere with a bill under discussion, by which a body would be created to decide on black-listing companies embroiled in bribery scandals.
