Capturing experiences in art

For art lovers and those of you who would like to learn about the art of taking photographs, Limassol and Nicosia will be welcoming the new week with exhibitions and a lecture.

The week begins with a lecture by Dr Andreas Christodoulides at the 6×6 Gallery in Limassol from 7pm until 9pm, on his exhibition which will also be housed at the gallery from Tuesday to Thursday.

The photography exhibition entitled Nepal, Through the Eyes of a Surgeon, will display photographs taken by Christodoulides when he spent three weeks as a volunteer surgeon at the United Mission Hospital in Tansen, Nepal.

While there he observed the people and their culture and was charmed by their hospitality. His photographs capture the everyday life of the Nepalese and the conditions at the hospital.

Through his 25-minute visual presentation lecture in English, he will unveil his experiences.

Also on Tuesday, the Gloria Gallery in Nicosia will be showcasing a collection of paintings by Alexandros G Michaelides.

The theme behind this new body of work is the differentiation of still life. The aim of the artist is to challenge our understanding of everyday objects and their use. Michaelides uses pencil and pen on paper, while on canvas he worked with oils. These selections of colours and medium play the most important roles in his new works.

“I also use the technique of academic measurement, following Euan Uglow. I feel that with this technique I am able to create a composition in which an (often) insignificant object can become the centre, the focus of the piece,” Michaelides says. “I have chosen colours that produce a subtle contrast of warm and cold hues, while purple, yellow, blue and orange tones are used to highlight the objects.”

Michaelides was born in Oxford in 1983 and was raised in Cyprus. He studied Fine Art first at Camberwell College of Arts from 2004 to 2005 and then moved on to Middlesex University, where he studied from 2005 to 2008. In 2012, he obtained his Master degree, with a specialisation in oil painting, from Canterbury Christ Church University.

The artist currently lives in Nicosia, where he works as an artist and art teacher. He has participated in group exhibitions in Cyprus and the UK, and has held solo exhibitions in Cyprus.
