A gypsy-jazz kind of vibe

Get ready to tap your feet to some gypsy jazz inspired beats from the Greek band Gadjo Dilo on Friday in Paphos and in Nicosia on Saturday.

The six-member band came together in 2009 with the sole purpose of reanimating the Manouche gypsy jazz musical tradition.

The band’s source of inspiration is the great gypsy jazz guitarist Django Reinhardt, who has been characterised by nearly all the great jazz musicians as a genius.

Their love for the guitarist is very much explored in the band’s debut album, Manouche de Grec, on which they also save some love for their other passion – rembetiko folk songs.

The band is no stranger to Cyprus as they have given a number of performances on the island and as they are coming back for more, it is obvious that there are quite a few fans over here waiting to get their ear full of them once more.

They have also performed in two of the most important Greek festivals, Nestorio River Festival and Ardas Festival, as well as performing in Balkan Jazz festivals.

So, Paphos and Nicosia get ready to go back to an older era with some gypsy jazz sounds, with a bit of Greek tradition thrown in and be ready to dance and sing along.
