Tinkoff cycling team training in Troodos

World Tour cycling team Tinkoff are training in Cyprus ahead of the Giro d’ Italia, the Cyprus Tourism Organisation (CTO) said on Monday.

The CTO said it was hosting the team in cooperation with the island’s cycling federation.

Tinkoff, one of the World Tour’s elite, is training in Troodos between April 2 and 16, ahead of the Giro d’ Italia at the beginning of May.

Among the team riders is Alberto Contador who won the Giro and Tour de France twice each, and Vuelta a Espania once.

Reigning road world champion Peter Sagan, who won the Tour of Flanders, is also a member of the team. Sagan, 25, has won the green sprinter’s jersey in the Tour de France for four years in a row and has eight individual stage wins in Grand Tours and numerous one-day races, since he turned professional in 2010.

The CTO said it would try to strike a long term cooperation with the team, which would help promote Cyprus as a cycling destination.
