Already more than 50 Turkish and Greek Cypriots have registered for a bi-communal triathlon which will take place on Sunday, April 24 in the village of Davlos in the occupied area of Famagusta.
The sports competition has been jointly organised by ‘Famagusta Our City’ and ‘The Turkish Cypriot Famagusta Initiative’, the Cyprus News Agency reported on Thursday.
“The event has been named ‘April joke’”, Nicos Karoullas, a member of ‘Famagusta Our City’ said, meaning that like an April Fool’s joke, ‘if you believe, it will happen’.
“The reunification of our country will come with the reunification of the people and every common activity, including sports activities, helps,” he added. “We prefer the future of Cyprus to be shared, and each community must meet the other.”
“The communication difficulties due to the separation of 42 years and a different language should not be overlooked,“ Karoullas went on to say.
The biggest problem, he added was that young people did not know the place of origin of their parents and had no memories of there.
“Young people do not have the incentive of memory. They do not go to something known or familiar, so we who remember must accompany them, to build bridges with young people and Turkish Cypriots, otherwise the division will be consolidated,” he said.
The triathlon is scheduled to begin at 8am and will include 90km of cycling, a 21.1km run and a 1.9km swim. An awards ceremony at 3.30pm will conclude the event.
