Police officer, 50, dies in his car on eve of his birthday

The funeral for senior police officer Thomas Efthymiou who died of a heart attack while driving on Friday night will be held on Sunday, police said.

Efthymiou, aged 50 pulled over in the car as he was travelling from Strovolos towards Akropolis in Nicosia at around 10:30pm.

Feeling unwell he stopped the vehicle on the left hand side of the road.

Drivers tried to give him a heart massage but he did not respond.

He was taken to Nicosia general hospital where his death was confirmed.

Eftymiou who was supposed to celebrate his birthday on Saturday, leaves behind a wife and three children.

Police expressed their deepest condolences.

The funeral will take place at 3pm on Sunday at the Saint Constaninou and Elenis Church in Dali.
