Policeman struck by drunk driver

A man who was caught speeding while under the influence of alcohol on the motorway from Nicosia to Limassol hit a police officer on Sunday afternoon.

Members of the police force tried to stop a car which was cruising at 141km instead, 41 km/h over the legal limit of 100km on the motorway around 5.30pm. The driver fled and police caught up with him at the Ayia Varvara exit.

The 61-year-old was found to be under the influence of alcohol but refused to take an alcotest. When he was told he was under arrest he reportedly resisted and hit one of the police officers.

Eventually he was arrested and charged in writing before being released. He is due to appear in court at a later date.
