Nearly 40 calls so far this month related to Easter bonfires

FROM April 1 until April 20, the fire services have responded to 38 calls related to traditional bonfires, or ‘lambradjia’.

“Some children set fire to the bonfires of others or steal the wood so they won’t be able to collect enough material to have a bigger fire then their own by Easter,” spokesman for the fire services Leonidas Leonidou said, “and some others just do it to have some fun at night.”

“So far there have been 38 calls, but we will have to see until after Easter if the situation is better or worse than last year,” he added.

In 2015, some 62 calls related to bonfires were recorded over the Easter weekend.
