Speeding mum fined

A 35-year-old woman was fined for driving almost double the speed limit while her child was in the car without a seatbelt and not in a proper baby seat, police said on Friday.

She had been caught a day earlier on the Zygi to Maroni road driving at 120km/h rather than the legally permitted 65 km/h on the coastal road.

“The fact that a driver was caught speeding may not be news. It is, however, sad that the young mother’s baby was in the car without wearing a and without being strapped in a stable seat,” police said.

“Any parent can realise that a potential crash at such speed and children not wearing a seatbelt, or properly strapped in could end in a tragedy.”

The mother was fined for her child not wearing a safety belt and will be prosecuted for exceeding the speed limit.
