THE inaugural ride for the European Cycling Challenge 2016 takes place in the capital on Saturday using the slogan ‘We join our mileage and help Nicosia climb up the rankings’.
According to the Nicosia Municipality, the five kilometre ride on May 7 will start at 4pm and finish at Nicosia town hall. Those with more stamina can continue further for a longer ride of 23 kilometres.
The municipality wants is using the event to join the annual European Cycling Challenge, an urban cycling team competition in European cities from May 1 to 31. The winner will be the city that covers the biggest mileage. Participation in the competition is free.
Those interested to take part can download the free app Cycling365 and enter the Nicosia group. Each time a bicycle is used as a means of transportation, such as to get to the workplace or the swimming pool, and not as a sports activity, the participants can record the trip via the app.
All kinds of bikes are permitted, rented or owned, even electric bikes. Trips with an average speed higher than 30km/h or longer than 35km are not allowed.
The Nicosia participation is supported by the Cyprus Cycling Federation, the Nicosia Cyclists, the Cycling Club of Nicosia and the group Cyclists across Barriers.
