As different as night and day

A brief email to the ministry of the interior:  It never ceases to amaze me that a Cypriot employer (of third-country housemaids) can interpret the word “day” in the contract as only when the sun shines and therefore when the housemaid has a day off the housemaid has to be back  before it gets dark because then it is night time and not daytime, where on earth does this mentality come from? Are not these things explained to the employer what constitutes a day, do they not understand that a day is 24 hours?
