Police are investigating the cause of fire that broke out on Saturday near the Pyrgos Tyllirias reservoir, and which burned around 30,000 square metres of pine forest and wild vegetation.

According to the fire service, the blaze was immediately detected by officers stationed at the Akoni fire outpost at around 3.20pm and was put under control some two hours later.

In total, 40 men of the fire service and the forestry department were recruited to put out the fire, with the help of seven trucks, and an excavator.

Due to the high risk, a forestry department plane and two helicopters were also called in to do water and foam drops.

Members of the fire service stayed on site overnight due to high risk of the fire re-igniting.
