Port pilots stage two-hour wide strike

Port pilots in Limassol

Cyprus Ports Authority (CPA) port pilots staged an impromptu two-hour work stoppage on Tuesday for the disciplinary actions taken by the CPA board against one of their colleagues, for turning, they said, against the authority in statements and articles.

The employee, Demetris Patsalos, who is a chief accountant at the CPA, is also the head of port workers’ union SYALK. In an announcement, SYALK said that the document justifying the disciplinary action launched against its chairman by the CPA board said that “he was slandering the authority in his correspondence, articles, and statements”.

“The charges, according to an investigating officer appointed by the CPA, are not documented,” the union said. It added that “for some grey areas that have to do with the president of the union, also being the chief accountant, the opinion of the state legal services is required”.

“The vindictive stance of our (CPA) board to the head of our union, who also happens to be a candidate for the CPA’s chief financial officer position, cannot be a coincidence,” it said.

The union called for an end “to the victimisation of Mr. Patsalos”.

During the work stoppage a passenger ship was served, SYALK said, and expressed its apologies to its other port colleagues. It also called on the other CPA unions to support them and that it would decide in due course if they are to proceed with further measures.
