National Guard Chief attends European Union Military Committee meeting

The Chief of the National Guard Lieutenant George Basiakoulis participated in the Ordinary Session of the European Union Military Committee that took place in Brussels on May 17th.

According to a press release by the National Guard, the meeting focused on EU military operations and missions, especially the Naval Operation (EUNAVFOR MED / Op.Sophia) in the central Mediterranean region to tackle illegal trafficking. Basiakoulis in his intervention pointed out the importance of the mechanism set up to exchange information on illegal immigration issues in the wider Mediterranean region.

He referred to the work carried out by the Search and Rescue mechanisms in Cyprus, which contribute military, police, volunteers and government bodies.

The participants exchanged views with the Secretary General of the European External Action Service, Alain Le Roy. The next Ordinary Session of EUMC will take place next November.
