Anastasiades in Istanbul for humanitarian summit

PRESIDENT Nicos Anastasiades will travel to Istanbul next week to take part in a summit organised by the United Nations, Government Spokesman Nicos Christodoulides said on Friday.

The World Humanitarian Summit will be held in Istanbul on May 23 and 24. It was announced earlier in the month that the President will take part in a global forum on poverty, at the invitation of the UNSG, but could not say whether he will be meeting with any Turkish officials.

Christodoulides said that the President is already scheduled to meet with the Prime Ministers of Finland and Lebanon, and that procedures are underway to arrange meetings with other heads of state.

He added that Nicosia is closely monitoring political developments in Turkey.

“Turkey is an integral part of the Cyprus settlement process. Any development in Turkey can influence this. We expect to see on the table how these developments affect positions on the issues discussed”.

President Anastasiades had said earlier in the month that he would seek a meeting with Turkish officials, but that will depend on the schedule of the conference.
