Eleni Theocharous, leader of Solidarity Movement decided on Monday to give up her newly elected post as MP and instead continue to serve as an MEP.
“We believe this serves in the best possible way the interests of the Cypriot people in view of the critical developments on the national matter,” a statement from the party said.
Her seat will be filled by the runner up, she said.
The statement added the decision was taken by “the party’s collective bodies bearing in mind the best interests of the country.”
Theocharous would continue to “defends the rights of Cypriots on a European level and Solidarity’s MPs would do the same on the domestic front”, it said.
