Cyprus assumes Presidency of the Commonwealth Health Ministers
Health Minister George Pamborides assumed the Presidency of the Commonwealth Health Ministers, at the end of a meeting, held last Sunday, in Geneva.
According to an official announcement, issued on Tuesday, the Commonwealth Health Ministers Meeting focused on member states’ level of preparedness and security vis-à-vis health risks and the sustainability of health systems.
Speaking at the 69th General Assembly of the World Health Organisation in Geneva, on Tuesday Pamporides said the increasing prices of drugs and health technologies, exercise a continuous pressure on health systems.
“The increasing prices of medicines and health technologies, as well as public and political expectations for the health systems, exercise a continuous pressure on health systems, thus jeopardising their sustainability,” he said.
The current world economic crisis, he added, has an additional impact on national budgets for health.
“The promotion of the right interventions to promote health and prevent diseases are an effective and valuable tool,” Pamporides said.
Concluding, the Minister referred to the importance of healthy ageing.
Cyprus takes over the Presidency of the Commonwealth Health Ministers for the following 12 months.
