Larnaca municipal secretary arrested for theft

The McKenzie beach area in Larnaca

Larnaca’s municipal secretary Lefteris Empedoclis was arrested on Wednesday over allegations of theft, bribery, and corruption, police announced.

According to a police report, a businessman who owns a night-club in the McKenzie beach area in Larnaca, who lives abroad, told CID that due to irregularities found at his establishment, he paid the municipal secretary €35,000 in cash to make sure the problem is ‘settled’.

However, police investigations at the Larnaca Town Hall over the last few days produced no evidence of the amount being deposited in the municipality’s accounts, nor of any procedure initiated to settle the matter of the irregularities, to which the businessman referred.

Thus, the municipal secretary was arrested on Wednesday morning in his office at the Town Hall, and is expected to be brought before the Larnaca district court on Thursday for his remand.
