First phase of annual Argonaftis exercise begins Monday

Civil Defence, in cooperation with the foreign ministry, National Guard and other state agencies are organising the first phase of the annual exercise Argonaftis 2016 on May 30-31, the government announced on Sunday.

Argonafits is a multi-national exercise, which involved diplomatic and military personnel from 17 countries. Overall, it will involve about 150 foreign participants with equal numbers from Cypriot services.

The scenario of the first-phase exercise centres on adverse developments in a neighboring country, which threaten the security of foreign citizens from European and other Western countries.

Under the scenario they are to be evacuated from the country in question to a safe destination which, for purposes of the exercise, is Cyprus.

Participants take part in logistical workshops to better prepare. The conclusions of the exercise will be used to improve procedures and practices.
