The fire service on Tuesday rescued two women from their burning second-floor flat in Ayios Dhometios in Nicosia.

The fire, the causes of which remain unknown, broke out in the afternoon. The women, a pensioner and a domestic worker, managed to get to the balcony and close the door behind them but they were still in danger from the thick smoke.

The fire service used a platform to extract the two women to safety.

The elderly woman was given oxygen on the spot and they were both taken to hospital. It is understood that their condition is not life threatening.

The cause of the fire was not immediately known. Investigators will be examining the scene first thing on Wednesday in a bid to determine the origin.
