Tobacco seized at crossing point (updated)

A 52-year-old man was remanded in custody for two days on Thursday after authorities found 7.2 kilos of tobacco he had tried to smuggle from the north.

The cartons containing the tobacco were found in the engine bay of the man’s car after he was stopped at the Ayios Dhometios crossing following a tip off.

The man was arrested and on Thursday he appeared before a court, which remanded him in custody for two days.

The tobacco and the car were seized by customs.

Police also searched two apartments belonging to the man but nothing was found.

Tax on the seized tobacco was estimated at €1,500.
