Rolling boulders gather no moss

Tomorrow it is Germany’s turn to take to the stage of the 19th Cyprus Contemporary Dance Festival at the Rialto theatre in Limassol.

Germany will be represented by the contemporary dance company Co-operativa Maura Morales, led by the dancer and choreographer Maura Morales and the guitarist, composer and sound artist Michio. Together these artists will present the performance Sisyphos Has Been a Woman, which deals with our androcentric society and the role of women, which resembles the mythical Sisyphus, posing key questions.

The dance talks of the absurdity of our androcentric society, which knows no mercy and has no real purpose. Other than absurd, it is also kind of funny due to the repletion of the way things work. It is a fate loop that will go on and on and on.

Just like Sisyphus in Greek mythology – the king of Ephyra who was punished for his deceitfulness and forced to roll a boulder up a hill, only to watch it roll back down again – the women in society drag the stone to the top of the mountain before it rolls back again into the abyss. With this being so, have women failed and if so, why? Is it due to the role they take on or is it just the way they are?

The Co-operativa Maura Morales ensemble, which was formed in 2010, has staged a large number of pieces which are regularly performed at prestigious international festivals throughout Europe, Asia and South America. They have also received a number of awards such as the prestigious Kurt Jooss Prize in 2013, the Cultural Prize of the City of Dusseldorf in 2014, the jury prize for best dance performance at the international dance show in Huesca, 2013 and the DURI- award in 2015, at the international dance festival ACT in Bilbao, Spain.

For people from Nicosia who would like to attend the performance, there will be free transportation to Limassol. The bus will leave from the Cyprus Handicraft Centre on Athalassa avenue at 7.15pm. To reserve a place on the bus, call 99 61-82 25.
