A look back on music

We all love looking back on the music that shaped us when it first came out in our youth or the music that has shaped music itself.

For those who reminisce about Rock ‘n’ Roll music from the 50s, 60s and 70s – or who just love the music of that rocking era – another Nostalgia party will be hitting the Nicosia music scene on Friday at the Powerhouse Restaurant.

The night will start and end with DJ Claudio spinning some tracks from Elvis Presley, Jimi Hendrix, Iggy Pop, Lenny Kravitz, Red Hot Chili Peppers and more. In between the DJ sets there will be a little surprise, the local band The Zilla Project will perform some Rock ‘n’ Roll classics live.

Leaving behind their bluesy trade-mark for a while, the four-piece band will show they can also add a bit of rock into their mix.

‘Big Mo’ a.k.a Emmanuel Vourakis on vocals and electric guitars, Nikolas ‘Honeyman’ Melis on the keys, Loizos Pafitis on bass and Stefanos ‘PP’ Meletiou on the drums, will bring the same kind of energy on stage than they did six years ago when they started because, let’s face it, music only get better with age.

For those not familiar with the band, in their normal performances the boys play original compositions as well as electrified versions of well-known blues classics. Their debut album entitled This One’s for the President came out in 2014 and after a long list of performances in 2015 – including one in London – the band is proving that the members’ musical abilities are only just starting.

The band has been influencing up and coming artists around the island, so don’t be surprised if they also influence the audience to take a bit of blues with your Rock ’n’ Roll.

The entrance fee is €5 or €7 if you wish to donate to the charity organisation Angaliazo, which provides food support to local families in need.

If you are not a fan of Rock ‘n’ Roll and you prefer chamber music, then the two upcoming concerts by the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra should tick all your musical boxes.

The members of the orchestra will conclude the orchestra’s musical season with a performance in Nicosia on Saturday and in Limassol on Sunday.

On both occasions the musicians will perform the Trio Sonatas by the Czech composer and musician Jan Dismas Zelenka.

The music of the Bohemian Zelenka (1679-1745) is a relatively recent discovery in today’s music world, although during his lifetime he was admired by JS Bach.

In his six Trio sonatas – written around 1720 – he astonishes the listener by displaying a desire for experimentation and idiosyncratic writing.

The orchestra will bring to life the composer’s vivid dance rhythms and colourful harmonies.
