The spirit is born again

Next week it will be Switzerland’s turn to take to the stage as part of the 19th Cyprus Contemporary Dance Festival.

The dance group Da Motus will perform the piece Souffle choreographed by Antonio Buhler and Brigitte Meuwly.

Souffle came about when Buhler and Meuwly were invited by Philippe Savoy, director of the Chamber Chorus Zeugma, to create an artistic collaboration inspired by the local (Fribourg) choral tradition. They rose to the challenge of uniting contemporary choreography and vocal creation based on an original score – by Caroline Charriere – around the fundamental role that breath represents for both modes of expression, i.e. dance and song.

Spontaneous harmonies and orchestrated tensions emerge, generating bizarre images and sometimes provoking ambiguous sensations. The celestial quality of the singing clashes with the raw, sensual character of the dance.

Through certain movements, Souffle suggests that it is through sexual union that the spirit is able to incarnate.

View the dance piece in Limassol on Tuesday or in Nicosia on Thursday to see if you agree.
