House Plenum changes day

From September, the House plenum will be convening on Friday morning instead of Thursday afternoon, parliamentary Speaker Demetris Syllouris said on Thursday.

After the summer break, he said, the House plenary sessions will be held every Friday at 10am, instead of Thursday 4pm.

This puts an end to long weekends, he said.

“MPs, parties, and the administration would need to work more, but the result would be much better,” he said.

Parliament will close mid July for summer but it will reopen on August 29 instead of October, as was the case to date.

The first plenary session will convene on the first Friday of September.

Asked if committees will continue working after the closing date since important bills like hospital autonomy had to be debated, Syllouris said it was an issue that has not been discussed.

“From then on, I urge the executive to submit the bills in time because it is not granted that parliament will convene as a matter of urgency when the executive does not respond,” he said.
