Syllouris urges EU to take initiatives to end bloody conflicts

House president Demetris Syllouris

The President of the Parliament Demetris Syllouris urged the EU to take initiatives in order to put an end to the bloody conflicts in Asia and Africa, develop an effective refugee policy and asylum service and provide financial assistance to the countries of origin of refugees, to improve their living standards and subsequently reduce migration flows.

Syllouris addressed the Plenary of the House on Thursday on the occasion of the World Refugee Day, on the 20th of June.

He recalled that two hundred thousand Cypriots became refugees after the Turkish invasion in 1974, and remain refugees until nowadays, in their own country.

He noted that the goal of the international community must be world peace.

“Cyprus does not remain indifferent to the drama of the refugees taking place every day in the Mediterranean and actively participates in the effort to protect and support the refugees, providing accommodation and other facilities at the reception centres in Kofinou, Larnaca and Paphos”.

He also allured to the World Day to combat Desertification and Drought saying that the Parliament is committed to continue to monitor the issue and that it will proceed in cooperation with the Government, to the adoption of any legislation deemed needed to combat desertification.
