Directions to volunteers

The volunteer commissioner on Tuesday urged people who wished to assist in extinguishing the fire in the Solea area to do so in a coordinated way.

However, the forestry department said later that for the time being no more volunteers were needed as there are already a lot in the area.

Authorities have also urged people not to drive to the area if they have no business there.

Earlier, Volunteer Commissioner Yiannis Yiannaki, advised people who wanted to help to contact the department beforehand.

“Those who wish to help are invited to contact the relevant department by phoning 22 608535,” a statement said on Monday morning, “to ensure better coordination of the efforts and greater safety.”

“It is important to arrive at the coordination site with proper clothing such as boots or high and hard shoes, long pants made from tough fabric, a face towel, and with tools such as hoes and shovels,” the statement continued.

The commissioner will remain at the coordination centre on Tuesday, coordinating the efforts of volunteers.

“Volunteers, the fire service, the civil defence, the forestry department, the interior ministry and the district administration continue the battle the flames,” he said, praising their courage and bravery.
