The silence of cities

Calling all artists, researchers, audiophiles, technophiles, art lovers and anyone else who loves to learn, to take part in the urban emptiness and augmented aurality workshop, taking place on July 2 in Limassol.

The free workshop, that will be delivered by Geert Vermeire in English, will present up to date results of the Urban Emptiness Network – an investigation of emptiness and silence in three contemporary cities: Athens, Edinburgh and Brussels developed between February and June 2015.

The discussion will also include the expansion of the network with the actions and events in the cities of Nicosia and Limassol.

Presentations of work that has already been conducted will be presented at the workshop as a starting point for discussion relevant to the aims of this specific Cyprus based initiative and ideas for its future development comprising a plan of events, possible collaborations and an exhibition at the NeMe Arts Centre with a parallel seminar.

More specifically, the workshop will focus on the locative media instruments that have been used in the actions of the network so far. noTours, Ech oes and SonicPlanet.

noTours is an open source software and free web editor for everybody to create and enjoy sound walks on android mobile devices, Ech oes is a platform for making location-based experiences, and SonicPlanet enables the creation of 3D soundscapes on any chosen location.
