A 60-year-old British man was handed a five-year prison term by the Paphos Criminal Court on Wednesday, after being found guilty of repeatedly sexually abusing an 11-year-old girl.
The court found the man guilty in six out of 13 charges relating to sexually abusing the minor at various times.
The man was arrested in September last year after the case was reported to Paphos police.
According to the report, the defendant had sexually abused the child between June and August 2015.
The girl told a relative about the abuse, who reported the case to police.
The court ruled that the defendant, who had been friends with the girl’s family, took advantage of the trust and influence he gained over the girl and her family, the vulnerability of the girl as a child of divorced parents, with the father long having cut off communication with his children, as well as the financial woes plaguing the family, often enticing the girl with presents and financial rewards.
The trial was held behind closed doors.
