Defence Minister Christoforos Fokaides on Saturday visited the 19-year-old conscript who is in serious condition at the Nicosia general hospital’s ICU after suffering heatstroke at Larnaca’s training facility on Thursday.
The ministry had said the new recruit, Loizos Panayiotou from Lythrodontas, fell ill late on Thursday evening and fainted. He was administered first aid by the camp’s doctor and he was rushed to Larnaca hospital.
According to state broadcaster CyBC, Fokaides visited Panayiotou who is intubated in the ICU, and was informed of his condition.
Panayiotou was examined by a doctor from Israel who arrived especially upon the request of Panayiotou’s family, CyBC said.
In the meantime, a probe is underway, launched by the ministry.
According to CyBC, Panayiotou was outdoors on midday, doing a task, along with other coscripts, despite orders from the defence ministry for soldiers to stay clear from the sun during those hours of the day.
Training during midday is banned.
