Condition of heatstroke conscript remains serious

Training during midday is banned

The condition of the 19-year-old conscript who is intubated at the Nicosia general hospital’s ICU after suffering heatstroke at Larnaca’s training facility on Thursday, remains serious, it was reported on Sunday.

Loizos Panayiotou from Lythrodontas, fell ill late on Thursday evening and fainted. He was administered first aid by the camp’s doctor and he was rushed to Larnaca hospital, where he was placed in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

Due to the seriousness of his condition, he was transferred on Saturday to the Nicosia hospital’s ICU. An intensive care specialist arrived on Saturday from Israel to examine the 19-year-old, upon the request of his family.

Defence Minister Christoforos Fokaides had visited Panayiotou to enquire about his condition.

In the meantime, a probe is underway, launched by the ministry.

According to CyBC, Panayiotou was outdoors on midday, doing a task, along with other conscripts, despite orders from the defence ministry for soldiers to stay clear of the sun during those hours of the day.

Training during midday is banned.
