A tribute to an overlooked composer

This year marks 25 years since the death of Greek musician and composer Dimitris Lagios. In order to celebrate his life and his work – which have sometimes been neglected – Greek singer Georgos Dalaras and others will perform a tribute concert on Saturday at the Skouriotissa mine in Nicosia.

During his 39 years, Lagios wrote a number of masterpieces including Omorfi Kai Parekseni Patritha (Beautiful and Strange Country), and Karteroumen (We are Waiting). These are the songs that we hear every year during our national holidays and during protests or special events to mark the Turkish invasion.

Lagios felt strongly about Cyprus and the pain the island had gone through, this is why he asked for his ashes to be scattered half in Zakynthos and half on our island.

The concert that will be performed in his honour, entitled A Decorated Boat Goes Towards the Mountains, will bring together a number of artists who cherish the artist and his work. These include Dalaras – who was Lagios’ friend – Fotini Velesiotou, Doros Dimosthenous and the composer’s daughter Iakinthi Lagiou. The Diastasi choir will also participate in this celebration, under the artistic direction of Andriana Sergidou.
