A fifteen-year-old boy from Droushia was killed midday on Wednesday when the tractor he was driving overturned.

According to police the fatal accident occurred on the Inia-Pittokopou road when, under conditions that are being investigated, teenager Andreas Kaponas lost control of the vehicle which tipped over, crushing him.

Police who rushed to the scene ascertained the boy had died instantly.

Local residents said that the minor drove the tractor frequently from the village to his parents’ farm near Fasli village, hauling a mobile water tank in order to carry water to the animals.

Police later arrested a 73-year-old relative, who is the uncle of the boy’s father and the tractor’s owner, over the circumstances under which the boy was allowed to drive the tractor.

A police report said he gave some explanations, which are being investigated.

State TV reported that police are investigating the possibility that the boy had been trying to make way for an oncoming car on the narrow road when he drove the tractor onto the shoulder of the road, causing it to tip over.
